The Typical Classroom

Going to school was an indifferent experience for me; I attended the classes simply because I was asked to do so. Filled my notebooks and read my textbooks, as instructed. Marks were rewarded and soon enough, 12th Grade was over and I was done. I had the knowledge but had no understanding of methods to implement them. There was no clarity on what I should be majoring in next but had to take a decision in just a few months of summer vacation.

Though these were just some of the problems I faced as a student, I wanted to dig deeper into the problems students are facing today. Let’s have a look at the current scenario.

Lack of individual attention from the educator
Performance anxiety is real and dreadful. When left unchecked, it can hinder the student’s confidence, resulting in poor academic performance. I was a slow learner who needed more time to grasp concepts, especially when they were technical. But, that seldom happened as the professors had their own deadlines to finish the syllabus. Their own deadlines often came in the way of genuinely being there for the students and their learnings.

Freedom to choose
Even a simple public forum (like Quora/ Reddit etc.,) will show you how many students are still asking for the freedom to choose subjects and careers of their interest. I remember feeling unheard and was not really asked what I wanted to do or never shown a path to maybe understand the opportunities and options that I have. Most students even today feel unheard, their goals are not given importance as most parents fulfil their own wishes and aspirations through their children.

Bringing in the change
Educators and students spend a great deal of time together every day making classrooms their second home. A school is like a big family that can enable even the youngest members to grow and flourish by working as a unit. One way to accomplish this is by keeping expectations and outcomes clear and transparent.

I had to condition myself and relearn a lot of stuff to understand how the world works and to figure out what I wanted to do and be. The vision at BeTutelage is simple–we do not want any more students to be unsure of what they want or be intimidated by studies, the educator or the school.

With a strong feedback management system, we help students get real-time updates on what they felt about a particular class, teacher, and topics they learned. Schools can now have the opportunity to take better decisions in tweaking and reworking the pedagogy to suit every student’s learning curve.

Perhaps in the near future, we will have happier and more content students with a positive outlook on life and what they want to do. With BeTutelage, our big ambition is to turn the students of today into better citizens of tomorrow.
